The Low Income Household Rebate was designed as a financial assistance scheme with the primary aim of easing a household’s burden related to the continuous increase in energy prices, particularly for the most vulnerable.

The Low Income Household Rebate provides some financial relief to eligible households through a rebate of $350 annually for retail customers and $385 annually in the case of embedded networks such as retirement villages or residential communities. This rebate is credited directly to the electricity bill, reducing the overall cost of energy for eligible households.

The NSW Low Income Household Rebate Eligibility Criteria 

The eligibility criteria for the Low Income Household Rebate are as follows.

  • New South Wales Resident: The applicant must be a permanent resident of New South Wales. This implies that the applicant must have a permanent address in the state.
  • Electricity account holder: The applicant must be the primary account holder for their electricity supply. That is, the electricity supply must be billed in their name.
  • Concession card: The applicant must have one of the following concession cards that is currently valid:
  • Pensioner Concession Card – from Services Australia or DVA
  • Healthcare Card – from Services Australia
  • DVA Gold Card – stamped with one of the following: “War Widow,” “Totally and Permanently Disabled” (TPI), or “Disability Pension” (EDA)

The NSW Low Income Household Rebate For Applying 

Applying for the NSW Low Income Household Rebate is a very simple process online, you will need a valid concession card and access to the internet.

  • Retail customer: To claim this rebate, you will need to contact your electricity retailer directly for instructions on how to apply. The retailer will guide you through their specific process.
  • Customer on supply: You can visit the Service NSW website and follow the online application process for the Low Income Household Rebate.
  • Go to the Low Income Household Rebate application page.
  • Enter your name, address, contact information and other requested personal information.
  • If required, attach copies of your concession card and any other supporting documents that may be asked for.
  • Double check the accuracy of all the information you have entered in your application before submitting it online.
  • Concession card information: You will need your concession card number.
  • Electricity account information: If applying, include your electricity account number and details.
  • Service NSW will then confirm your eligibility and process your application upon receipt.
  • You will receive an email notification or mail about the status of your application, telling you whether you are eligible for a rebate.
  • If approved: The rebate amount will be credited to your electricity account or as a direct payment, depending on your type of electricity supply.

Amount Of NSW Low Income Family Rebate 

NSW Low Income Family Rebate: This is a rebate that helps eligible families with the cost of electricity bills. The rebate amount depends on the type of electricity account and the residential area the applicant lives in.

  • Eligible applicants have a regular account with any retail electricity provider. The rebate is $285 per year, tax-free.
  • The rebate goes directly into the account of the customer who is paying the electricity bill to provide immediate financial relief to the customer.
  • Eligible long-term residents in residential communities – caravan and mobile home parks and retirement villages – who receive their electricity bill from their community operator receive $258.50 annually.
  • These people will still be entitled to the rebate even if they are part of an embedded network whereby electricity is supplied and billed by the community operator.

 The NSW Low Income Household Rebate To Change Recent

In response to the high cost of living and the ongoing energy crisis, the NSW Government has made a number of changes to the Low Income Household Rebate program.

  • These changes will provide additional financial support to families experiencing difficulties with energy bills and ensure the rebate continues to be useful to families who need it.
  • Higher rebate amount: The Low Income Household Rebate has been increased from $285 to $350 per household, per financial year, from 1 July 2024.
  • Additional funding: The Government has provided an additional $100 million in energy relief to vulnerable families through a number of rebates, such as the Household Energy Rebate and Medical Energy Rebate.
  • Better support: This reflects the Government’s commitment to supporting low-income families and helps low-income households.
