Causes of Bird Flu 2024
Bird flu was first reported in humans in 1997 in Hong Kong. This outbreak was linked to handling infected poultry. H5N1 is naturally found in wild water birds, but it spreads easily to domestic poultry. Humans become infected with the virus through contact with feces, nasal secretions, or secretions from the mouth or eyes of infected birds. Eating properly cooked poultry or eggs from infected birds does not spread bird flu, but eggs must be cooked thoroughly.
Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, can spread to humans through contact with body fluids from infected animals. This includes saliva, respiratory droplets and feces. You can breathe in tiny dust particles from animal habitats or get the virus into your eyes, nose or mouth after touching contaminated body fluids. You cannot get bird flu if you eat properly cooked poultry or eggs. Once an avian flu virus is identified, any flocks infected with the avian flu virus are immediately removed from the human food supply to ensure safety.
